Shinty equipment consists of variously shaped sticks (known as caman) and a ball. Different shaped heads are used for different positions in the field and some samples and guidelines can be found below.
Please note: The WACC has a number of "loaner" sticks for use at practices and events for participants. For information on acquiring a caman for your own, visit the Camanachd Association's equipment page or contact Karl at Karl@ShintyWA.com for more information.

The four styles of caman or shinty stick: (from left to right) forward, midfield, defender, goalie (or keeper). The angle of the bevel effects the arc of the ball (much like the club faces in golf), forward sticks have the least angle so that shots will not go over the goal, goalies and defenders have the most angle to lift the ball over attackers while clearing the defensive zone.
|

FORWARD'S CAMAN
The relatively flat angle allows forwards to keep the ball lower, an advantage for goal scoring even with 10 foot high nets. |

MIDFIELDER'S CAMAN
The base is wider than the forward stick, resulting in the head being more angled. This provides more lift to shots.

Aside from a caman and balls (which are generally provided for practices and events for those who don't have their own), other basic equipment you would need to play includes:
- Shorts, sweats, leggings
- T-shirts or sweat shirt
- Running shoes
- Shin guards (either standard soccer or field hockey ones work well)
Other optional equipment that you don't need, but should try to get are:
- Knee socks (to hold your shin guards up)
- Athletic cups (for the men of course)
- Cleats or other turf shoe - no metal spikes or cleats are allowed (if you can get "hi-top" cleats that help protect your ankle that is best...American Football cleates are often designed this way)
- Players under 18 years of age are required to wear a helmet
You should also consider bringing along some water or gatorade-type drink, sunscreen, and a towel (for mud, sweat, etc).
Please note: Minors will need to get a waiver signed prior to participating by their parent/guardian.
